Sea Turtle
Project Overview
Sea turtles are among the most rapidly disappearing animal groups in the world. In Sri Lanka, they find natural breeding grounds along the coast, making the marine life here particularly notable. The country’s coastline offers crucial nesting sites that attract sea turtles, drawing tourists from around the globe who are eager to witness and experience their natural life. These visitors come from diverse environments, hoping to see sea turtles in their natural habitat and support conservation efforts. The unique opportunity to observe these ancient mariners in such a pristine setting highlights the importance of protecting their habitats for future generations.
Location
Galle is a city on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, renowned for its historic Galle Fort. Founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century, the fort features expansive stone sea walls that were later enhanced by the Dutch. These walls encircle car-free streets, showcasing a blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and British architectural styles. Key landmarks include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and Galle Lighthouse, which stands prominently on the fort’s southeast tip. The fort and its surroundings offer a glimpse into the city's rich colonial past, making Galle a significant cultural and historical destination.
Various private organizations and the government have initiated efforts for the conservation and breeding of sea turtles. However, the Wildlife Act of Sri Lanka has not yet established a formal status or standards for their conservation.
Although the Wildlife Act does not address turtle conservation formally, various organizations have launched projects driven by their own interests. Initially, these efforts may appear profit-driven, but it is evident that they contribute to the conservation and breeding of sea turtles in meaningful ways.
This project, set in Sri Lanka's coastal areas, offers tourists a relaxing and enjoyable experience in a healthy environment. Visitors can interact with sea turtles, assist with their care, and participate in activities such as cleaning the turtles, providing food, and handling eggs for breeding. Additionally, tourists can engage in measurement programs to track the turtles' growth and health. This hands-on involvement not only enriches the visitor experience but also supports the conservation and well-being of these magnificent creatures.
Through our organization, we educate the public on how to conserve sea turtles and release them back into the ocean. You can join us for this program in the morning or afternoon, gaining valuable knowledge while enjoying a rewarding experience. Your participation not only enhances your understanding but also significantly contributes to maintaining the balance of the world's ecosystem, supporting environmental conservation efforts and the health of marine life.
